50 members of the European Parliament have addressed Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayiip Erdogan in a letter which accuses the Turkish army and the state of disorders in the southeast regions of the country. The authors of the letter threatened to break off the EU membership talks with Turkey. As reported by Cumhurriyet Turkish newspaper, the European Parliament members reminded the Turkish authorities that the recognition of the fundamental rights of the Kurd population is a precondition for Turkey’s EU membership.
“We seriously state that the Kurdish issue should not be solved by force. The problems of the region should be settled by political and negotiation methods,” the letter says. For its part, Zaman newspaper reports that the disorders in Turkey and the infringement of rights of the Kurdish population will be discussed at PACE Spring Session in Strasbourg.
