“The Verkhny Lars checkpoint was used by transnational and criminal groupings for contraband of drugs and weapons to Russia,” official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Mikhail Kamynin said when explaining the reasons for the checkpoint closing.
“Russia understand the hardships the population and commodity producers, including those from Armenia, face over the closing of the Verkhny Lars checkpoint and seeks for ways for the settlement of the situation. We are hopeful that the Georgian side will treat this temporary measure with understanding and will not pose obstacles,” he said.
To remind, July 8 Russia blocked the Kazbegi-Verkhny Lars checkpoint at the Russian-Georgian border for an uncertain period. The formal explanation was the necessity of some repair works, reported RIA Novosti.
