Turkey won’t become a regional player unless it normalizes relations with Armenia

Any agreement on opening of Turkish -Armenian border is unlikely to be signed before Apr. 24 Hay Dat Bureau Director Kiro Manoyan told a news conference today.
Turkey’s teps toward normalization of ties with Armenia to serve its own interests, Kiro Manoyan noted, adding that Ankara understands that unless certain results are achieved during negotiations, the dialogue with Yerevan won’t be a success. “Hence, I believe that agreement on opening Armenian -Turkish border and establishment of diplomatic relations will be signed at least before the return football match in Turkey. Turkey understands that it won’t become a regional player unless relations with Armenia are normalized.”

Kiro Manoyan expressed confidence that Armenia can achieve opening of borders and establishment diplomatic relations without making concessions to Turkey.

“I’m assured that after August events in Georgia Turkey itself would initiate steps toward normalization of ties with Armenia,” Kiro Manoyan stressed.
