Russian, Iranian Presidents discuss peaceful nuclear program

Russia President Dmitry Medvedev Thursday, November 18 stressed the importance of Iran having a peaceful nuclear program, the Kremlin said, in his first meeting with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad since a breakdown in ties.

“The conversation was of a completely open nature. Neither ourselves, nor our colleague avoided unpleasant questions,” Medvedev's top foreign policy aide Sergei Prikhodko said after the meeting in Baku.

“The president of Russia spoke of the importance of the continuation of a peaceful Iranian nuclear program,” Russian news agencies quoted Prikhodko as saying.

Medvedev met Ahmadinejad on the sidelines of a regional summit in the Azerbaijani capital Baku during one of the lowest points in relations between the two countries, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

Earlier Russian President Dmitry Medvedev issued a decree banning any military cooperation with Tehran based on UN Security Council's resolution No. 1929.
