Azerbaijani oppositionist, chairman of the National Statehood Party of Azerbaijan (NSPA), Nemat Panahli, arrested for beating Baku resident Eldar Rzayev, believes his imprisonment has a political context and links it to his recent publications.
Earlier, Baku’s Nasimin District court sentenced Panahli to 2-month imprisonment on charges of hooliganism.
“The true reason behind the arrest was series of interviews, containing severe criticism of Azerbaijani authorities,” editor in chief of Nota newspaper Sardar Alibeyli stated.
Nemat Panahli was a coordinator of Armenian pogroms in Baku in January 1990.
