U.S. evacuates its citizens from Egypt

The State Department spokesman, Philip J. Crowley said that Frank G. Wisner, a former ambassador to Egypt who knows Mr. Mubarak, landed in Cairo on January 31.

Crowley declined to say whether Mr. Wisner, who served as ambassador from 1986 to 1991, was carrying a message from President Obama, BBC reported.

“He knows some of the key players within the Egyptian government,” The New York Times quoted Mr. Crowley as saying. The administration believed it would be “useful” for him to meet with Mr. Mubarak and bring his perspective, he said.

Crowley told reporters that by the end of the day “it would have dispatched nine flights ferrying U.S. citizens from the country.”

In the next few days the U.S. expected to fly citizens from the cities of Aswan and Luxor, he said.

The U.S. said it had evacuated more than 1,200 Americans and expected to fly out 1,400 more in the coming days
