Georgia should be in charge of religious needs of its national and religious minorities, as a country that cares about its citizens, conflict expert Paata Zakareishvili stated, commenting on Turkey’s intention to construct mosques in Georgia.
Dwelling on Georgian patriarchy’s criticism of the initiative, Zakareishvili noted that the issue should be resolved between Georgian and Turkish authorities, whereas patriarchy, as a non-governmental structure, must not interfere.
According to Georgian media reports, governmental committees of Turkey and Georgia signed a protocol, envisaging Turkey’s construction of one and rehabilitation of three mosques in Georgia, while the Georgian side will be able to reconstruct four ancient monasteries in the territory of Turkey.
