Simonyan says Azerbaijani soldier strayed across border, committed crime

Armenian Security Council Secretary Alen Simonyan has commented on the case of an Azerbaijani serviceman who crossed the Armenian-Azerbaijani border on September 29, shot and wounded an Armenian woman in the village of Shaki and caused injuries to her children.

According to Simonyan, the Azerbaijani soldier had lost his way. He also stated that criminal proceedings had been initiated against the serviceman in Azerbaijan as well, Radar.am reported.

“The Azerbaijani serviceman lost his way. They informed us from the very beginning. Criminal proceedings have also been initiated against him in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev also assured me that, from their perspective, he had committed a criminal offense,” Simonyan said.

While Alen Simonyan was answering journalists’ questions during a briefing at the COP17 summit, he received a call from Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev, which happened during the live broadcast.

“By the way, he’s the one calling. I’ll finish here and speak with him,” Alen Simonyan said.

On October 1, it emerged that Azerbaijani citizen and serviceman Nasimi Musayev had illegally entered house No. 20 on 6th Street in the village of Shaki, part of the Sisian community in Armenia’s Syunik region, and opened fire after being discovered. A woman born in 1987 was wounded by the gunfire, while two of her three children also sustained injuries. The Azerbaijani serviceman subsequently fled. Following search operations, Nasimi Musayev was located at No. 26 on 6th Street in Shaki. He was remanded in custody for two months.
