Wrestler Karen Aslanyan wins world championship gold

Armenian wrestler Karen Aslanyan has won the 2026 world championship gold medal in the 63 kg category, defeating Azerbaijan’s Nihat Mammadli 8-4 in the final.

Mammadli is a world and European champion.

The 31-year-old Aslanyan recorded four early victories during the tournament before overcoming his opponent in the final, Radar.am reports.

This is Aslanyan’s first career gold medal at the world championships.

Gevorg Tadevosyan also secured a bronze medal at the Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships after defeating Ukraine’s Yaroslav Filchakov.

However, the end of the bout was marked by tension. The Ukrainian wrestler requested a challenge to contest the referees’ decision, but his appeal was rejected. Filchakov subsequently refused to accept the defeat, and the match concluded in a tense atmosphere.

This is Tadevosyan’s first medal in senior-level wrestling competitions.
