Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces Edvard Asryan says measures are being taken to prevent deaths among servicemen during peacetime, with a specialized commission examining cases of suicide in the military.
Asryan declined to specify the measures being implemented, citing a lack of time, Aysor.am reports.
“Explaining that would take a very long time, and I don’t have that time right now,” he told reporters.
The General Staff chief said the issue was of particular concern to military officials and confirmed that a specialized commission was examining suicide cases.
“We also need to understand how things reach that point, because there are circumstances that should not lead to such an outcome,” Asryan said.
On November 3, Investigative Committee Chairman Artur Poghosyan told the National Assembly that investigators had identified several cases in which, according to him, servicemen’s suicides were linked to their affiliation with a particular religious group.
“This is a matter of national security, and we will now initiate processes to address it. Our public will also be informed of these findings in the near future. This does not concern all cases; we already have several such cases,” Poghosyan said.
He did not provide further details about the alleged connection
