Arrests of human rights activists continue in Azerbaijan

Human rights activist Vidadi Iskenderov has been arrested in Azerbaijan for two months.

Iskenderov is charged with the prevention of voters’ free expression of will and intervention in electoral committees’ activity during the November 2010 parliamentary election.

However, Akif Alizade, the activist's lawyer, considers the accusation baseless. According to Alizade, Iskenderov is persecuted for his active civil stance, human rights work and participation in opposition rallies. Moreover, the lawyer noted that Iskenderov submitted video evidences of falsifications after the elections.

Iskenderov was recently subjected to administrative arrests twice for taking part in opposition protests.

According to the opposition movement Public Chamber, 15 people were arrested in Azerbaijan last month for attending anti-government demonstrations, RFE/RL reported.
