The stand of the US regarding the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) situated in Metsamor Armenian city has not changed, says a statement by the US embassy in Armenia over the prospective US strategy towards the ANPP, “Arminfo” agency reported. As explanation the US embassy has informed that along with the European Union and other interested parties Washington openly stated it wished “all nuclear plants of the Soviet period to be closed by the end of their functional cycles.” “We are worried about structural shortcomings available in the projects of old reactors and their safety,” the embassy statement says. “At the same time we understand the concern of the Armenian party due to the problem of energy supply and recognize the role of the Metsamor NPP for Armenia, as well as the need to create alternative energy sources before Armenia is able to close the station,” the embassy said, emphasizing that the US government has not made any other statements over its policy and strategy regarding the Metsamor NPP.
