Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly President Peter Schieder and the Secretary General of the Organization Walter Schwimmer, today welcomed the decision by the National Assembly of Armenia to abolish death penalty and to ratify Protocol No. 6 to the European Convention on Human Rights. “This important step brings Europe closer to total abolition of the death penalty, which is one of our Organization’s priorities. We strongly encourage the Armenian authorities to continue fulfilling the commitments made by the country when it joined the Council of Europe,” they specifically stressed in their message. To date, 41 of the 45 Council of Europe member states have ratified or signed this protocol.
