Overchuk doubts success of Armenia’s market diversification

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk has expressed doubt that Armenia’s partners have succeeded in redirecting exports to other markets, RIA Novosti reports.

“Apparently, no. Of course, they have received some limited assistance, but it is not comparable to the large and familiar market that Russia represents for them. And we, too, are accustomed to those products,” Overchuk said in an interview with Pavel Zarubin, responding to a question about whether Armenia’s attempts to reorient toward other markets had been successful.

“Today, the situation is such that we are compelled to protect our market. And we are proposing that our Armenian partners work together with us in this direction,” the deputy prime minister said.

Rosselkhoznadzor has restricted imports of all quarantine-regulated products from Armenia since June 12, as well as their transit through Russian territory to Eurasian Economic Union member states.

Rosselkhoznadzor head Sergei Dankvert explained that restrictions on supplies of Armenian agricultural products are linked to the lack of effective quality control among producers, rather than politics. Local producers have already reported major losses.

In March 2025, Armenia’s parliament adopted a law on launching the process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union. The Russian side has said that simultaneous membership in both the EU and EAEU customs unions is impossible.
