Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Russia expects an unequivocal and appropriate response from the Armenian authorities to remarks made by Shirak Governor Davit Arushanyan concerning “Ivans.”
The Russian diplomat described the remarks as being “neo-Nazi in nature,” Lenta.ru reports.
“Such blatantly outrageous neo-Nazi slogans should have no place in any self-respecting society, especially Armenian society, which is so sensitive to matters of history in general and its own history in particular,” the Russian diplomat said.
On October 17, Shirak Governor Davit Arushanyan wrote on his Facebook page, addressing opposition figures: “Gyumri is not your ‘Nizhny Tabor,’ and the people of Gyumri are not your ‘Ivans.’”
