Strong Armenia opposes proposed new Constitution

During a parliamentary press briefing at the National Assembly, Tigran Abrahamyan, secretary of the Strong Armenia parliamentary faction, addressed the initiative to draft a new Constitution for Armenia and outlined the faction’s position.

“We are confident that the new Constitution, or what we call ‘Aliyev’s Constitution,’ will receive no public support,” he said, according to Panorama.am.

Arega Hovsepyan, another lawmaker from the faction, said Strong Armenia always has its own plans and political agenda.

“We have a clear agenda: what we call ‘Aliyev’s Constitution’ has no place in Armenia’s domestic political life. Accordingly, we will pursue that agenda,” she said.

According to Abrahamyan, Armenia is now facing another demand for concessions, while peace remains absent.

“By following this path, Armenia is moving further away from peace. This is not peace; these are concessions without peace. Strong Armenia will do everything possible to put an end to this endless chain of concessions. Armenia needs peace without concessions.

“Armenia has nothing left to concede. Whatever we could have conceded, we have already conceded. Enough is enough. Each time, Azerbaijan sees that it can take something more. It cannot be ruled out that Azerbaijan will present new demands after the Constitution,” Abrahamyan said.

Justice Minister Srbuhi Galyan told reporters at the National Assembly that the Constitutional Reform Council was not prepared to assume responsibility for the text of the new Constitution. Consequently, the Ministry of Justice would bear ultimate responsibility for drafting the document and determining its content.

Galyan explained that, under the circumstances, she had proposed continuing work on the constitutional draft within the ministry and presenting it to the public under the ministry’s name.
